Even the all-time greats make mistakes from time to time. In this classic World Series of Poker main event clip, Phil Ivey stuns the commentators by mucking the winning hand on the showdown, apparently unaware that he just won a pot worth 2.1 million chips.

Ivey, with pocket 8s, raises preflop to 320,000, and after most of the table folds, Jordan Smith raises to 1 million with Ace-9 offsuit.

A flop of 5s-Qh-10s gave Ivey three spades and a 74 percent chance to take the pot. Smith checked, as did Ivey.

A Queen of spades on the turn gave Ivey his flush – but he didn’t realize it. Smith checked with Ace high, and Ivey followed suit.

The river card was an Ace of spades, meaning Ivey won the hand and Smith was left a pair of Aces to Ivey’s flush. Smith announced his Ace and turned his cards over for Ivey to see – but instead of showing his flush, Ivey mucked his cards and Smith took the chips.

Poker pro Barry Greenstein said in a podcast that Ivey didn’t find out about his mistake until the hand aired on ESPN.

“He asked if there was any way (ESPN) could doctor the hands. He didn’t remember four spades being on the board,” Greenstein said. “He said ‘I think this hand is never going to leave me.'”
